Our Story

Jiu Jitsu 101 is a modern martial arts academy that is deeply rooted in old-school martial arts philosophy. We honor the teachers that came before us, and we respect the martial code.

Our martial arts base and lineage is a combination of Combative Karate Jutsu (Kyokushin & Kokondo Karate), Japanese Jujutsu (Judo) and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).

The JOURNEY
to jiu jitsu 101

Jiu Jitsu 101 Oregon Coast is the culmination of a lifelong martial arts journey spanning more than three decades of training, teaching, and community leadership.

The academy's roots trace back to 1991 when founder and head instructor Ronin Colburn began developing what would become KHJi Karate-Jutsu. Throughout the years, the program evolved through continuous study, practical application, and a commitment to personal growth. Influenced by the teachings and philosophy of Shihan Paul Arel of Kokondo Karate and the legendary founder of Kyokushin Karate, Mas Oyama (born Choi Yeong-eui), the academy developed a foundation built upon discipline, realism, character development, and lifelong learning.

As the program expanded, it eventually became known as The Asylum Combat Academy, operating primarily throughout the Portland Metropolitan area of Oregon. Beginning in 2009, the academy also conducted classes in a shared facility in Vancouver, Washington, serving students from a variety of martial arts backgrounds.

In 2010 Ronin Colburn began his journey in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under JT Taylor, Carlson Gracie and with permission continued that journey with Michael Downing and the Oregon Pound in Corvallis Oregon under the Pedro Sauer lineage (Gracie Jiu-jitsu) later the academy in Corvallis switch hands when Michael Downing moved to New Mexico and began San Juan Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in Farmington NM, while the distance was a challenge it did not hinder Ronin Colburns journey.

In 2013, the academy's headquarters officially relocated from Portland, Oregon, to Vancouver, Washington, where The Asylum Combat Academy continued to grow and serve the martial arts community until March of 2022.

In March 2022, Ronin Colburn and his family chose to pursue a new chapter of life on the Oregon Coast. Seeking a slower pace and a stronger connection to community, family, and personal wellness, he brought his passion for martial arts to Rockaway Beach, Oregon. Training continued wherever opportunities arose, with a renewed focus on helping others improve their confidence, health, self-defense skills, and quality of life.

This transition marked a significant evolution in the academy's mission. While maintaining the martial values of discipline, respect, perseverance, and personal responsibility, the focus expanded to include community outreach, family involvement, wellness, and empowerment through martial arts.

On October 1, 2023, the academy officially established its Oregon Coast headquarters. As the vision for the school became clearer, it was evident that a new name would better reflect its purpose and identity. The Asylum Combat Academy was rebranded as Jiu Jitsu 101 Oregon Coast.

The name carries special meaning. It reflects the academy's location along the historic Highway 101 that runs directly in front of the school, while also representing the concept of "101"—the fundamentals. The belief at Jiu Jitsu 101 Oregon Coast is that mastery is built upon a strong foundation of basic principles practiced consistently over time.

Today, Jiu Jitsu 101 Oregon Coast serves as a community-centered martial arts academy dedicated to practical self-defense, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Karate-Jutsu, kickboxing, personal development, and family-oriented training. The academy welcomes students of all ages and experience levels, providing an environment where individuals can build confidence, improve fitness, develop discipline, and become stronger versions of themselves.

More than a martial arts school, Jiu Jitsu 101 Oregon Coast is a place where character is forged, friendships are built, and the pursuit of lifelong learning continues—one class, one lesson, and one student at a time.

"RONIN"
RANDALL COLBURN

CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

Ronin’s Journey

His martial arts journey began in the early 1970s training in Karate, Judo, and Japanese Ju-Jutsu. As a youth, martial arts became the central focus of his life, guiding him through the toughest obstacles that face a young man. Providing structure, discipline and a code to lean into when life struggles hit with unyielding force. This journey has introduced him to countless others, both on and off the mats, who greatly influenced his path. Today, he continues his development under the mentorship of Michael Downing and Pedro Sauer.

For nearly 38 years, he has served as a Black Belt instructor in Karate Jutsu and Japanese Ju-Jutsu. He has also been teaching Brazilian Jiujitsu for more than 15 years. He currently holds a Blackbelt in Brazilian jiujitsu and continues to teach Brazilian Jiujitsu under the guidance and mentorship of Professor Downing & Pedro Sauer for over 10 years and counting. Passionate about sharing knowledge and experience, he is committed and honored to continue to grow personally with the next general of martial artists, as the journey continues here on the Oregon Coast and beyond.
